Little Makings

 

Yesterday, a foot of snow fell here. Bouncy, fluffy white replaced the icy layer that's been stagnant for the last few weeks. It's nice to have everything in white again. So, the occasion for sledding today has arisen and a group of us will be packing our hats and mittens to slide the slopes. In the meantime this last week, I've worked on a few small projects. A friend taught me how to make macarons a few days ago and oh my, they've been so good. I've been working on this blanket for some time now and decided to take a break and make this fun hat. A blog I admire very much helped me find the pattern. Hoping life is swell with all who come to this space of ours. Happy weekend!

Ravine Trail

We've had a bad case of post-holiday indoor syndrome. So today, finally, we took a hike up the Ravine trail at the north tip of Missoula valley. There wasn't quite enough snow to use snowshoes but it was just difficult enough to get us sweating a bit and the trail gave us some beautiful views of Missoula from above. After getting back we found out the trail connects with the rest of the Rattlesnake Creek trail system so we plan on hiking further at some point, though we might save that for summer. In the meantime, we plan on getting some cross country skiing and snowshoeing in before school starts.

This Thing All Devours*

Happy 2013, everyone. Kelton and I had a hell of a good 2012, with many fun trips to all kinds 

of places and loads of good times at home, too. In addition, we started this blog and have really enjoyed having a place to share our photos.

And yet, there remains room for improvement.

In the New Year, we have several resolutions to achieve. Apart from the obvious ones like learning how to pick a lock, how to kill a shark, how to love, and how to throw a curve, we also intend to do the following:

1. Climb more stuff.
2. Have less acne.
3. Throw higher caliber parties.
4. Do less winter camping.
5. Do more other camping.
6. Do the same amount of pop-locking.
7. Take more photos.

So mark your Mayan calendars, homeboys and homegirls. You'll wanna stick around for this.

Eve Post

My favorite day of the year is consisting of sugar cookies, Miracle on 34th Street, wrapping presents and lots and lots of Christmas music. Nate is traveling eastward with his family and will soon celebrating as well. To all our friends, family and dog-pals, have a merry merry Christmas Eve!

Camping. Snow Camping.

Looking to make one last hurrah together, before the end of the World on Friday, we researched possible winter road trips and getaways. We sifted through cabins across the state but found nothing worthwhile, and considered, however briefly, taking a road trip down to Durham, NC to see our recently-escaped friend. But in the end, we settled with the tried-and-true Bass Creek Campground, just a little jaunt south of Missoula. 

The campground was closed, but luckily Nate knew of the picnic area accessible through the back (Nate is also very handsome and strong). So we tucked our tent up into the trees and made camp.

Our adventure consisted primarily of keeping warm. We'd never gone snow camping before and realized early into the evening that it was slightly more difficult than anticipated. Despite our troubles with starting a fire, ice-cold fingers and toes, fifteen hours in sleeping bags, and excessive amounts of bacon, we actually did have a very fun time. We had icy Bass Creek to keep us company in an otherwise-silent white wood. Also, we managed to cook up this delicious corn chowder in the dark, and ended the night thankful for fire and warm sleeping bags in sub-fifteen degree temperatures.

Finally

It came in the most beautifully frantic storm I've witnessed in a while. We spent the blizzard-night downtown, sopping wet and snowball-fighting. And in the morning the whole frozen valley was white white white. The snow makes everything a little happier...exactly what we need for finals week.

In the Spirit

We cut mini snowflake ornaments for hours and listened to this Christmas album over the weekend. Still no snow...but the forecast looks promising for the rest of the week. Right now, we're concentrating almost exclusively on studying for final exams, but I'm dreaming of when we can just relax in
holiday-goodness for hours on end.
